Africa’s Uptake Of Renewable Energy Is Moving In The Right Direction

The trend is largely driven by solar, with a large pipeline of projects amounting to 1.2 GW expected to come online in 2021 outside South Africa, over double the amount commissioned in 2018. With the right policy framework and investment, Africa could meet a quarter of its indigenous energy needs through renewable sources by 2030, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.

The Norwegian company said the facility, the third solar plant at the site, was connected to the grid and operating commercially. This third phase is known as Dyason’s Klip 2, with 86 MW of capacity.

AfDB Approves $830,000 To Set Up Green Mini-Grids In The Republic Of Guinea

The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced that it had approved a grant of $830,000 (~₹62.95 million) to the Guinean Agency for Rural Electrification (AGER) to help it set up green mini-grid projects in the Republic of Guinea.

TOTAL Invests $490 Million In Indian Solar Joint Venture

TOTAL recently announced that it invested US$ 490 million in a joint venture with Adani Green Energy. The joint venture will host 2.1 gigawatts of operational solar power projects previously fully owned by Adani Green Energy and its subsidiaries. The two companies now hold 50% each in the new joint venture.

New Zealand Looks To Add 6.5GW Of Solar As It Heads To 100% Renewables

New Zealand electric power transmission operator Transpower believes its generation capacity will be around 95% renewable by 2035 and moving towards 100% by 2050, making use of around 6.5GW of solar capacity.

Renewable Energy Jobs In Australia Surge To Record Levels

Employment in Australia’s renewable energy sector surged nearly 30 per cent to its highest-ever level following a boom in wind and solar power construction activity in 2018-19. The figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed full-time equivalent jobs in renewable energy rose by more than 5700 to reach 26,850 as every state and territory recorded significant increases. Victoria’s renewable energy industry experienced the sharpest growth in the country, up 72 per cent to 6090 workers, while South Australia increased 41 per cent and New South Wales 25 per cent.

RES Buys Contested 100MW Solar Project On Outskirts Of Canberra

International renewable energy developer RES says it has bought the 100MW Springdale solar project in the Yass Valley region of NSW – on the outskirts of the national capital Canberra – from Australian-based developer Renew Estate and will seek to navigate the proposal through a heavily-contested planning process.

Spain Targets Huge New Wind And Solar Additions As Part Of Stunning Renewables Plan

Spain is targeting a stunning renewable energy share of 74 per cent of total electricity by 2030, and 42 per cent of total energy demand, in its new National Energy & Climate Plan (NECP) that has been submitted to the European Union. The plan includes a commitment to install over 2GW of new wind energy capacity and 3GW of new solar capacity each year through the decade to help meet the targets.

TOTAL Acquires Global Wind Power France

Total through its subsidiary Total Quadran has acquired a 100% stake of Global Wind Power France to accelerate its growth in renewable energy in France. Global Wind Power France owns a 1000MW portfolio of onshore wind projects, including 250MW scheduled to come on stream by 2025.

Pexapark’s “Linkedin For Renewables” Goes Live

Iran Dominates Mideast’s Renewable Power Capacity

Iran dominated the Middle East’s renewable production capacity which rose 13 percent to 22,710 megawatts (MW) last year, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says. Iran accounted for 57 percent of the Middle East’s total in 2019 and 63 percent in 2018, the agency said in a report.

Saudi Arabia Shortlists Bidders For 1.47GW Of Solar, Includes 2.7c/kWh Bid

Saudi Arabia’s Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO) has announced the shortlisted bidders for the second round of the country’s National Renewable Energy Program, which included a lowest bid of SAR 0.0609042/kWh ($A0.027). With 1.47GW of capacity up for offer across six solar projects the second round of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program was broken up in to two categories, A and B, the first with 70MW on offer, and the latter with 1.4GW on offer.

Consortium Completes Financial Closure For $400M Oman Solar Power Plant

Gov. Ralph Northam has signed the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which requires the state’s utilities to switch to 100% clean energy by 2050, while also adding 16 GW of solar and onshore wind, 3 GW of energy storage and the closing of all the state’s coal power plants by 2024.
